What would it look like if you had peace with God, yourself, and everyone you know? How would that impact your life; your attitude; your mental health? I don’t want to paint a rosy picture that your life would be void of tension and conflict, because those things will always be a part of your life. {bible}James 1:2{/bible}
So, is it possible to have peace in the midst of all the things that life throws at us? I believe so. Challenging … yes. Impossible … no.
Suppose that you have a teenager and you have one of those classic verbal battles with
her. She wants to exercise more control over her decisions, yet the decisions that she has made indicate that she is not quite ready yet.
She blows up and stomps off. Where is the peace? Please understand that these types of things happen. They are used by God in a positive way to make our spiritual muscles stronger. This is an opportunity to pursue peace. Give it a chance.
How do you do that? The same way God pursues peace with you … with love, patience, gentleness, and self-control. With a firm, but gentle hand he steers us to him {bible}Psalm 139:5{/bible}, shows us our wrong – usually through another person or Scripture, accepts our cry for forgiveness {bible}1 John 1:9{/bible}, cleans our slate while forever forgetting our sin {bible}Jeremiah 31:34{/bible}, and moves on.
Here is what it might look like with your teenager: after a cooling off period, you initiate a level-headed conversation, talk through what happened while revealing why it’s not such a good yet for her to make all of her own decisions, offer amends, and put it behind you.
If you are dealing with deeper issues with someone who has abused or neglected you, whether you are the victim or the perpetrator, there only one way the peace of Christ will rule in your heart: forgive. If you think that this is impossible, I would encourage you to read the gripping stories of seven Rwandan survivors of genocide who found everlasting peace after forgiving their neighbors who were also their tormentors in the book “As We Forgive.”
Peace is not something that can be infused into us like liquids from an I.V., rather it is built into us as we allow God and the gospel to transform us from our old ways into our new ways as we go through of the ups and downs of life.
Strive for peace and pursue it. {bible}Hebrews 12:14{/bible} {bible}Psalm 34:14{/bible}
