A Clear Conscience: The Key To Living Without Regret

Having guilt, shame, or embarrassment in your life feels like an albatross hanging around your neck. The longer it hangs the heavier it gets.

Maybe that is why 93% of women who have had abortions regret it years later. Or why some folks live in the past, replaying in their minds the should of, could of, and would of's, while missing out on the present.

Jesus says, "Come to me all those who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28 ESV) Going to Jesus is the key. He is the only one who can permanently remove that guilt, shame, embarrassment, and pain. He is the one who can clear our conscience.

So how do you go to Jesus? The answer is simple, but not easy: just talk to him. This takes one part courage to face your past, one part humility to admit your wrong doing, and one part faith that he will deliver you.

Regrettably, far too many of us lack the will to go to Jesus, so we remain stuck in the soupy mud. The result: the faster we run the deeper we sink. We needlessly hurt ourselves because our pride is more important than our conscience. Our pain is greater than our purpose.

Jesus reverses all of this. He took your shame and guilt upon himself to the cross…every bit of it…and gave you his clear conscience and innocence. Then he broke the power of that guilt and shame on the day he rose…and gave that power to you too. If that were not enough, he left his Spirit behind (the one that dwells in your heart) to strengthen and guide you in your time of need.

And God did all of this for you because he loves you...without measure.

Consider how your life would be different if you lived with a clear conscience:

• You would be free from the things that bind you; be able to live in the present; and be reconciled to your past. Imagine how freeing this will feel!

• You would keep short accounts with others. Imagine no more long held grudges!

• You would have reconciled relationships. Imagine growing closer to the estranged!

• You would live faithfully and diligently. Imagine living everyday like you were dying!

Paul tells us that he "always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man." (Acts 24:16 ESV) The writer of Hebrews writes, "Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things." (Hebrews 13:18)

Paul knew the importance of this. May you realize the importance too, and step out armed with God’s power to be courageous, humble, and faithful as you work through your past to clear your conscience…and remember, He is by your side, always.
